When I have multiple companies, do I have to reset all of them? Or is there some way to determine which "one" is causing the error?

If you look in the log, you will see the offending company.  If doing a search in the text look for a forwards or backwards caret <  or >

Cause #5, sometimes the filename just won't meet Intuit's needs. Try simplifying the file name and changing company path. Just happened to me now. The error was a 8004041D with a message that you don't have permission to open the company automatically.

We are aware that if a file has two .qbw in it e.g. Phone Systems, LLC.QBW 3.QBW it will throw an error.

I also see 80040435 (and sometimes 80040430) when the file is opened on another machine in single-user mode. In that instance, you have to get the other person to switch to multi-user mode.
